C.A.R.E.
Framework
C.A.R.E. stands for:
Cannabis Assessment Relationship Examination. The C.A.R.E. framework is a fluid model divided into 4 phases of treatment, from the initial assessment phase through to the maintenance of sustained change. Recognizing each individual's unique journey, the time spent in each phase will naturally vary. The provided session guidelines are simply suggestions intended to be adaptable to the client's needs, not rigid requirements.

Phase 1:
Assessment
You assess your client and identify a concern regarding their cannabis use. The client minimizes or does not believe their cannabis use is related to their presenting issues or even that it constitutes an issue at all.
Phase 2:
Build Rapport
You continue to work with your client on their initial treatment goals that exclude their cannabis use. They are not seeing the improvements they desire. Given the rapport you've built and the coping skills they've learned, you inquire about the role of cannabis use. The client becomes contemplative.
Phase 3:
The Experiment
Your client shows increased willingness to consider that cannabis might be a factor in their challenges. You present "The Experiment," a trial period during which they reduce their cannabis use over a number of weeks to observe its effect on their presenting issues. You emphasize that they can return to their previous level of use after the trial if they don't experience any benefits.
Phase 4:
Sustained Change
The client has come to the realization that their cannabis use was detrimental, has successfully reduced their intake, and is committed to maintaining this level of reduction. You work with them to identify potential warning signs of relapse and establish clear parameters for when they should reach out for additional help. You also review the coping skills they've acquired and discuss how to utilize them effectively.

Timeline
Do I always start in Phase 1?
Phase 1, assessment, is crucial, though its application may depend on your clinical setting. For clinicians conducting initial evaluations, Phase 1 will be central. However, if assessments are conducted separately within your organization, you might begin directly in Phase 2, while ensuring you review the assessment information on inheriting a client.
